Malaysia is the most under-rated South-East Asian destination for Indian travellers — and the cheapest gateway to the region right now. Since December 2023, Indian passports get **visa-free 30-day entry** (no application, no fee), direct flights run 4–5 hours, and the country splits neatly into four very different trips: modern Kuala Lumpur (Petronas Towers, malls, cheap excellent hotels), heritage Penang (UNESCO Georgetown street art and the best street food in Asia), island Langkawi (duty-free beaches, cable car, mangrove tours), and wild Borneo (orangutans, jungle, world-class diving at Sipadan). A first trip typically covers KL + one of the other three.

May to September is the best window for peninsular Malaysia (KL, Penang, Langkawi) — drier, sunnier, lower humidity. November to February is the north-east monsoon — heavy rain on the east coast (Perhentian, Tioman) but mostly fine on the west. Borneo has its own pattern — March to October is best (Sabah). Avoid the haze season (August–October) some years when Indonesian forest fires drift over, especially around KL — check air-quality forecasts before booking.
