Patagonia

Patagonia is the vast, wind-scoured wilderness at the southern tip of South America, split between Chile and Argentina, where the Andes shatter into jagged granite towers, immense ice fields calve electric-blue glaciers into milky lakes, and guanaco and condor roam a near-empty landscape. Its crown jewels are Chile's **Torres del Paine** national park — home to the legendary W Trek and the three sheer towers that give it its name — and, across the border in Argentina, the **Perito Moreno** glacier and the spires of **Fitz Roy** above El Chaltén. This is one of the world's great trekking and wilderness destinations: raw, remote and humbling. For Indian travellers it is a long-haul bucket-list adventure, best in the southern summer, and one of the most rewarding trips on the planet for those who love big, dramatic nature.

Patagonia's practical season is the southern-hemisphere summer, roughly November to March — note this is the reverse of India's seasons, so you trek here during the Indian winter. December to February is peak: the longest days (light until 10–11pm), the mildest temperatures and all trails, refugios and boats open, but also the busiest and the windiest. November and March are excellent shoulder months — fewer people, autumn colour in March, and still good (if cooler) conditions. Outside this window (April–October) is the southern winter: cold, short days, snow and many closures, suited only to specialist winter trips. Whenever you come, Patagonia's defining feature is its ferocious, unpredictable wind and four-seasons-in-a-day weather — pack for it.
