Soneva Fushi is the original — opened 1995, still the Soneva flagship, still ranked among the world's best resorts. The villas are crusoe-style beachfront pavilions with private pools (not water villas — the Baa Atoll house reef is too shallow). The differentiator: UNESCO Baa Atoll biosphere protection means the marine life around the resort is exceptional, especially Aug-Nov when manta rays and whale sharks aggregate at Hanifaru Bay (a 25-min boat ride). Dine-around includes every restaurant; the observatory hosts the resident astronomer; the ice-cream and chocolate rooms are still free-flow. Four nights covers two beach days and two activity days (manta excursion, sand-bank picnic, sunset cruise).
